New movie The Star tells ‘the greatest story never told’
In Sony Pictures Animation’s The Star, the film follows “a small but brave donkey named Bo [who] yearns for a life beyond his daily grind at the village mill. One day he finds the courage to break free, and finally goes on the adventure of his dreams. On his journey, he teams up with Ruth, a loveable sheep who has lost her flock and Dave, a dove with lofty aspirations. Along with three wisecracking camels and some eccentric stable animals, Bo and his new friends follow ‘The Star’ and become accidental heroes in the greatest story ever told — the first Christmas.”
Featuring an impressive voice cast including the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Kelly Clarkson, Christopher Plummer and more, The Star comes from the studios behind The Smurfs, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Miracles From Heaven and Soul Surfer.
Executive Producer DeVon Franklin, an American Hollywood Producer, best-selling author and renowned preacher, said that “having the animals involved gives you some space to infuse creativity.” Franklin said the film offers many lessons for viewers and Bo’s internal feeling that there’s something greater for him to pursue will inspire many. He hopes the film will leave audiences feeling both “hopeful” and “purposeful.”
“We all have a destiny, a calling or a purpose … [often] we don’t realise how it’s all working toward it,” Franklin added. “That’s what’s kind of great about Bo’s journey.”
Franklin is a recognised authority on faith and the entertainment business. He is best known for the films Miracles from Heaven, Heaven Is for Real, and New York Times best-seller book The Wait, which he co-wrote with wife Meagan Good. Beliefnet calls him one of the “Most Influential Christians Under 40,” Variety Magazine named him one of the “Top 10 Producers to Watch,” and Ebony Magazine has named him one of the “Top 100 Influential African-Americans in America.”
“The Star is the perfect family movie!” – Patricia Heaton
The Star will hit cinemas around the country November 30, just in time for the Christmas season and director Tim Reckart said this version of the film is the “greatest story never told.”
“The thing we’re doing with this movie that lets us have creative license is that it’s the story of the nativity, but from the point of view of the animals. That’s a story that nobody has told before. We’re calling it the greatest story never told,” Reckart said.
The Star will feature the voices of Hollywood stars Steven Yeun as Bo the donkey, Kelly Clarkson as Leah the horse, Anthony Anderson as Zach the goat, comedian Gabriel Iglesias as Rufus the dog, Kris Kristofferson as the Old Donkey, Gina Rodriguez as Mary (Mother of Jesus), Zachery Levi as Joseph, Oprah Winfrey as Deborah, Tyler Perry as Cyrus and Tracy Morgan as Felix.
Well-known Christian actor Patricia Heaton from Everybody Loves Raymond fame (and the voice of Edith the cow in the movie), recently shared that … “The Star is the perfect family movie! It gives an ‘animal’s-eye view’ of the first Christmas in a way that is funny, engaging and inspiring. Moms, dads, grandparents and kids will be swept up in the adventure of a new look at a timeless story.’
