Perth based Christian artist sings about the danger of making idols

Jade Diary is a Perth based singer songwriter who describes her music as “atmospheric indie pop” with touches of “fantasy and melancholy”.

Her voice – akin to Rebecca St. James and Merise – is quietly powerful with touches of Sarah McLachlan, Kate Bush and Florence + The Machine thrown in for good measure.

Her debut single – A Thousand Days – did well on Christian radio, and hit #2 on Triple J’s Unearthed Pop Chart and #10 on the Overall Chart.

The song focused on forgiveness. Jade says the song was inspired by Corrie Ten Boom’s approach to forgiveness.

After securing a top ten single with A Thousand Days and the very willing ears of a growing live audience, Jade Diary returns this week with a song that’s destined to not only give her continued chart success, but also to help better define who she is.

Cold Hearted is a solid example of Jade’s vocal growth and confidence, combined with a modern musical package, and intriguing lyrics.

Jade says the song can be appreciated on multiple layers. “It’s about making an idol of someone or something, and expecting that person or thing to deeply satisfy us. But really, only God can do that.”

Her new album is called Mermaid.

Music journalist Wes Jay says that Jade’s music is striking. He says that with every listen, one captures a greater glimpse of each song’s real meaning.

“The thing about Jade’s music is she skilfully tells a story, and then as you listen to each song over and over, the real meaning becomes clear. And we see ourselves in the stories, or at least I do,” Wes admits.

“In a day where Christian songwriters often state the obvious, it’s great to see Jade crafting a lyric that teases and engages her audience.”
