Australia's most played Christian song of 2021

Hold On To Me by US singer/songwriter Lauren Daigle has been named the most played Christian song on Australian Christian radio in 2021.

Hold On To Me – released in February 2021 – is Daigle’s sixth number-one single and her most recent offering since her 2018 Grammy Award-winning album Look Up Child.

“The song spent a total of 29 weeks in the survey. It owned the top spot for six weeks and dominated the Top 5 for 21 weeks,” says researcher Wes Jay, who compiles a weekly, national chart of Christian music (TCM).

The airplay chart, established in 1999, draws on playlist data from over 25 Christian radio stations across Australia. TCM recently released its annual list of top 100 songs for 2021, as well as its list of top 50 artists.

22-year-old US singer/songwriter Riley Clemmons was named 2021’s most listened to Christian artist in Australia. Clemmons had five songs featuring in the top 100 song chart for 2021: Keep On Hoping (which ranked the number six most played song), Headspace (ranked at 28), Healing (39), For The Good (54), and Without You (52) – a collaboration with Social Club Misfits.

The 2021 top charts again show “strong support” for Australian Christian artists.

Clemmons is the first female to win top honours on the top 50 artists chart in more than a decade, after Britt Nicole (2008), Bethany Dillon (2005) and Stacie Orrico (2003). Meanwhile, Daigle is the first woman to hold the number one position on the annual top 100 songs list since Emma Mullings with Skinny Roads (2016).

In recent years the top Christian song of the year was taken out by Aussie pop duo For King & Country for Together (2020) and God Only Knows (2019). The band had the second most played song in 2021, Amen. In 2018 the honour went to Hillsong’s Young & Free for their song Let Go.

Young & Free were also Australia’s most-played artist of the year in 2020 and 2017, while For King & Country held this position in 2019, 2016 and 2014, and tobyMac in 2018, 2015 and 2012.

Jay says the 2021 top charts again show “strong support” for Australian Christian artists.

“A total of 31 songs by Australian acts secured positions in the top 100; two scored places in the top 10, and 11 in the top 50,” he says.
