Religious discrimination bill is watered down

The Morrison Government’s Religious Discrimination Bill will fall short of what conservative Christian groups have been calling for. The Bill has been substantially changed in discussions in the Liberal party room.

The”Israel Folau” clause which would have protected speech by employees out of work time has been removed.

Another clause that provided protection for medical practitioners and health workers from providing services to which they had a conscientious objection on religious grounds has also been delated.

The bill has been titled as a “religious discrimination bill” rather than a “religious freedom” bill reflecting these latest changes.

More to come.
