Grommets are finding faith in between the waves

On a Saturday morning, around 40 young grommets (that’s a young surfer) gather on suburban Sydney’s northern beaches area to pray together and encourage one another in their Christian faith.

The group is part of the international ministry of Christian Surfers, which exists so that every surfer and every surfing community has the opportunity to know and follow Jesus.

Nick Meakes is the leader of the group and it was Christian Surfers that first introduced him to Jesus.

“[I want to] see the power of the gospel move throughout the whole northern beaches.” – Nick Meakes

“If you’ve never given Jesus a go … I think we have to taste it to know what we’re missing out on. You have to give it a go before you can even realise how incredible God’s love is,” says Meakes. “When you see what I saw you won’t be able to help … but give your life to him”

After only six months of getting together, Nick says his Christian Surfers group already has 40-50 groms.

“My hope for the future is to see groms throughout the whole northern beaches talking about Jesus, whether it’s on a Saturday at Christian Surfers, or it’s on a Sunday at church, or on Friday at youth group, or even an afternoon in the surf or at school, they’re just talking about Jesus.

“[I want to] see the power of the gospel move throughout the whole northern beaches [of Sydney],” says Meakes.
