Thousands of Bibles ready to give to babies born in 2020

When a surprise parcel arrived at the Buckley household in June 2020, husband Sam couldn’t quite believe its contents: a colourful new children’s Bible, packed with 140 Bible stories made for young children — and loads of stickers.

The Buckley’s were thrilled to receive their children’s Bible as part of the Bibles For Bubs program.

“It was just beautiful and our kids loved it. They were stoked to be able to have a story read to them every night from the book.”

Each year, the Bible Society sends up to 2,000 children’s Bibles  as a gift to families of babies born in the previous year to celebrate their first birthday. For the next five years, the growing bubs receive hand-written birthday cards from the Bible Society, culminating in another Bible for their primary years.

According to Sam, Vida, 3, and Luna, 1, “absolutely love the stickers. So every time we read the Bible, they put a sticker on the page.”

Unknown to him, Sam’s wife (also named Sam) had signed up for Bible Society Australia’s Bible For Bubs program, after seeing an ad on Instagram.

Behind it all is Belinda Faulks, Project and Relationship Manager at Bible Society Australia. Since establishing the program in 2018, close to 10,000 children’s Bibles have been delivered to children and their families across the country.

“Every year parents write to us thanking us for the gift of the Bible for their beloved small human, and tell us how well it has been received,” said Belinda.

The hard work behind Belinda and her team’s efforts is not lost on Sam Buckley.

“It’s a simple [program], but it’s also not simple,” he said. “Someone has to put in the work, someone has to get the cash. But it was really significant for us.”

“Some people don’t get a chance to shop for a kids’ Bible. So it was a real gift for us.”

Now, Sam is getting the word out there for parents of children born in 2020. He hopes many will sign up to receive their free Bible. And they have.

Over 1,000 families have already registered to receive their gift, after registration for children born in 2020 opened up last week. With 2,000 Bibles to giveaway, Belinda suggests getting in quick.

Registrations for Bibles for Bubs is open now for children during 2020, and closes on 31 March 2021. For more information and to sign up, visit the website.
