Taliban are searching through people’s phones in Afghanistan following their takeover of the country, a leader of a leading Christian satellite broadcaster says. “We’re hearing from reliable sources that the Taliban demand people’s phones, and if they find a downloaded Bible on your device, they will kill you immediately,” reports Dr. Rex Rogers, who is president of the Christian media group SAT-7 North America, “It’s incredibly dangerous right now for Afghans to have anything Christian on their phones. The Taliban have spies and informants everywhere.”
Taliban militants are even pulling people off public transport and killing them on the spot if they’re Christians or considered ethnically “unpure” the Sat 7 statement says.
‘“Because it’s so dangerous to seek the company of other Christians, many Afghan believers are totally alone, with not even one other Christian with whom to talk,” Rogers says. “Our local director told me: ‘Most dare not attend a house church. They’re alone, fearful, and looking to us. We’re [the media ministry] their last resort’.”
Launched in 1996, SAT-7 (www.sat7usa.org) – with its international headquarters in Cyprus — broadcasts Christian and educational satellite television programs to more than 25 million people in the Middle East and North Africa.
“People are terrified, everyone is afraid,” one Christian girl says in a Sat-7 call for prayer. “I am only 16 years old and cannot take what is happening around me. I’m crying out to God right now.”
“Please pray urgently for the people of Afghanistan, particularly Christians. Believers are afraid for their lives, and some have received death threats. What was already a very high cost of discipleship has become an imminent threat to safety. Please add your voices in prayer at this time of emergency,” says SAT-7 CEO Rita El-Mounayer.
An anonymous SAT-7 viewer said, “As Christians, we are in real danger. Sadly, in the past two to three days, my family and I have received death threats. In this emergency situation, I have no other way but to escape from the country. Please be our voice; please help us to be heard so that we can flee from this hell as soon as possible.”
