At Claremont College, a School Counsellor has a significant role in all aspects of pastoral care, working with students, the leadership team, staff, parents and the wider community. The successful applicant will have expertise and experience working with children and adolescents (aged 5-12 years old) in the provision of counselling support. They will have relevant experiences in a school setting and qualifications in counselling, be able to work effectively with students and their families, able to develop a significant rapport with students, and demonstrate a deep understanding of the needs of children and adolescents, and respond to and support the needs of parents and caregivers.

Ideally, applicants must be registered with AHPRA and be eligible for membership with the APS. Applicants will bring a broad depth of experience and possess a strong understanding of child and adolescent development and the issues that children, staff, parents and other stakeholders bring to such a role.

Selection Criteria:

Essential Criteria

  • Experience as a Counsellor with children 

  • Ability to coordinate, organise and provide counselling, well-being and intervention programs with a solution focussed philosophy

  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills 

  • Have a high level of initiative and enthusiasm
  • Demonstrated experience in dealing appropriately with highly confidential and sensitive information, and ability to maintain confidential case files for all clients

  • High level of attention to detail and accuracy
  • Demonstrated organisational skills and the ability to prioritise the needs of staff, students, school families and the school executive in a busy school environment 

  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Enjoy working in a collaborative, team-based environment
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work within a team or autonomously 

  • Be a committed Christian and an active member of a church 


Desirable Criteria

  • The ability to conduct and report on cognitive, social, emotional and behavioural assessment
  • The ability to develop, facilitate and deliver seminars and programs for students and parents on issues concerned with emotional and social well-being
  • Registered with AHPRA and be eligible for membership with the APS.

Specific Responsibilities

  • General counselling for students as required
  • Provide assessment of students, counselling and consultancy to individual students and/or their parents. Provide appropriate feedback and follow-up to parents, teachers, pastoral and support staff.
  • Assist staff to identify and address children’s specific needs; social, emotional, learning and/or behavioural

  • Assessment and diagnosis, followed by appropriate programme design 

  • Interpret educational psychologist’s/other specialist reports/results 


  • Work collaboratively as a member of the Pastoral Care team, and with the Learning Support Team, parents and caregivers, and other agencies to develop school based support for students
  • Attend Weekly Pastoral Care Team Meetings and relevant student IP meetings 

  • Liaise where appropriate with the Principal, School Executive and staff as a consultant for learning and behaviour challenges and to improve student learning and well-being outcomes
  • Guide families in referrals to external professionals when required. Follow up such referrals to assist parents and students and to provide feedback to relevant staff
  • Provide child protection advice
  • Respond as part of a team to critical incidents or emergencies 

  • Maintain professional records, collect and report on data, as required by the Principal

  • Participate in and conduct professional learning experiences for staff
  • Assist with submissions, NCCD and other relevant grants and funding from Government sources
  • Assist staff with assessment and reports
  • Assist individuals and cohorts of students who are experiencing difficulties such as social, communication, anxiety, depression, conflict resolution skills, and working memory
  • Collaborate with Class Teachers and the Deputy Principal to plan, program and deliver social skills lessons

You will also be required to perform other duties as required by the Principal. You must also comply with all requirements of the School in relation to the access to and reporting of information you become aware of in the provision of counselling services.

  • Statement of your Philosophy of Pastoral Care, in the context of a Christian Education (250-500 words);
  • Statement identifying at least one area of professional interest, strength and expertise that you would bring to this role (250 words);
  • The names of 3 confidential referees (preferably one being the minister of the church you attend and your 2 most recent employers);
  • International applicants must include visa status indicating your eligibility to work in Australia; and
  • Current proof of working with children clearance documentation.
